Biography

Stephen Strickland

I'm a native of Atlanta, Georgia and grew up in San Jose, California. I have lived in Japan since 1994 and Osaka since 2008. My educational background is in Literature (B.S. UCLA 1991) and Applied Linguistics (M.A. University of Queensland 2006). I began photography in 1992, documenting street and graffiti art in Los Angeles, and continued documenting street art in Tokyo and Yokohama. Since 2023, I have focused on anonymous street portraiture.

Artist Statement

In the fleeting moments of urban life, faces emerge and disappear like ripples on a vast ocean. My pictures seek to pause these ephemeral encounters, transforming the image of anonymous passersby into a deeper study of human experience. Each photograph in this collection represents a moment of intimacy—a glimpse into the unguarded expressions that reveal the depths of our shared humanity.

Photography possesses a unique ability to capture the subtle nuances of facial expression that often escape our conscious observation. In public, social conventions prevent us from truly seeing one another. We avert our eyes, we avoid looking too closely. Through photography we are permitted to linger, to study, and to contemplate the remarkable stories written across each face encountered.

I am drawn to the unscripted moments—the furrowed brow of concentration, the half-smile of private amusement, the distant gaze of someone lost in memory. These expressions, captured in their natural state, reveal character in ways that posed portraits cannot. There is an honesty in the unaware face, a vulnerability that speaks to our universal experiences of joy, sorrow, contemplation, and hope.

My approach is one of respectful observation rather than intrusion. I seek to document rather than direct, to preserve rather than manipulate. Each photograph is a meditation on the complexity of human emotion and the stories we carry within us. In our increasingly digital world, where faces are filtered and curated, these authentic moments become even more precious. My work celebrates the unretouched reality of human expression—the imperfections that make us real, the spontaneous emotions that connect us across cultural and social boundaries. Through photography, I invite viewers to engage in the contemplation that street etiquette denies us, to truly see and connect with the strangers who share our urban landscape.

This collection is ultimately about recognition—recognizing ourselves in others, recognizing the profound in the mundane, and recognizing that every face tells a story worth preserving. In capturing these silent narrators, I hope to create a visual dialogue about empathy, connection, and the beautiful complexity of the human experience that surrounds us every day, waiting to be truly seen.
